Pictures from the annular eclipse

These are from my trip to the Grand Canyon on Sunday. As the eclipse approached annularity, the lighting was surreal - it was a grayish dark instead of an orangey dark that you usually expect at sunset, and the sun seemed far too high in the sky. The eclipse fooled the local fauna, though; some dusk-dwelling insects started buzzing around, nearly an hour early. Then, the sky started getting a bit brighter, and we got to watch a spectacular, faintly-eclipsed sunset.

To actually take photos of the eclipse, I used a less-than-professional approach: I either borrowed a telescope with a proper eclipse filter, or I pressed my camera against a cheap pair of binoculars pressed against #10 welding glass. But, hey, it worked!

Tiny Victorian Cottage

With only $3000 on renovation and furniture, Sandra Foster transformed a Catskills hunting cabin into this romantic 9-by-14-foot Victorian cottage. She did all the carpentry work herself, using vintage columns, flooring and wavy glass windows. via nytimes

Oh, I’m in love.

So beautiful.
